Why formalize the operating range and the operating mode of a post?

Because a task that is not written is done in several ways, depending on who holds the position. The operating range sets the operations, their order, and the means employed; the operating mode tells how each one is to be performed at the position. Written down, they give everyone holding the position the same reference.

The operating range: the order of operations

The Grand Terminology Dictionary of the Office québécois de la langue française defines the range of operations, also called the range of operations, as the «document establishing, for a given item, the description and sequence of operations to be performed, the time allocated for each one, and the material and human resources deployed to obtain the finished product». We have not found any standardized definition (AFNOR or ISO) of the operational range: this terminological definition serves as a reference, not a standard.

The operating procedure: the gesture at the station

For a given operation, it describes how to operate, set up, clean, or change tools on the machine, step by step. It is also referred to as an industrial operating mode or work instruction: this is the text that the operator follows in front of the machine.

Where does it get stuck?

The manufacturer’s manual describes the machine; it does not know your workshop, your parts, or the sequence of your tasks. The operating mode, on the other hand, is built on the spot. The absence of written instructions is evident when someone arrives at the post without having previously held it: a new hire, a change of post, an interim worker. These are precisely the moments when the Labor Code requires safety training (article L4141-2).

Procedure: What does the Labour Code require?

The Labour Code does not name the operating method, the operating range, or the work instruction. It requires that those who use or maintain a machine be informed and trained. The written operating method is a way to keep this information at the station.

Inform (Article R4323-1)

The employer appropriately informs workers responsible for the use or maintenance of a machine: of the conditions of use or maintenance; of instructions or guidelines, including those in the manufacturer’s instructions; of the conduct to be followed in the event of foreseeable abnormal situations; and of the conclusions drawn from experience. All workers in the establishment are also informed of the risks associated with the equipment in their immediate environment and of any modifications to it (article R4323-2).

Former (Articles L4141-2, R4323-3 and R4323-4)

Appropriate practical safety training is provided for new hires, for changes in job duties or techniques, for temporary employees, and is repeated periodically. It is also renewed and supplemented as often as necessary to keep up with equipment developments. Maintenance and modification require specific training.

From the manufacturer's side

The instructions are an essential requirement for health and safety (point 1.7.4): in Annex I to Directive 2006/42/EC, and then in Annex III to Regulation (EU) 2023/1230, which applies from 20 January 2027. This is one of the sources of the instructions that the employer transmits; it does not, however, describe the work as it is carried out in your workshop.

A job description is, however, mandatory under another name when the job exposes employees to dangerous chemicals: the job description (article R4412-39). That is a separate subject, outside the scope of this page.

What will Optima Work Instructions cover?

Optima Work Instructions will focus on formalizing the ranges and operating procedures. It is currently under development: we are not describing a function that our developers have not yet finalized.

The range

Writing down the operations to be performed on a piece, their order and the means used.

The operating procedure

Write down the way each operation is to be performed at the station.

We'll talk about it in 30 minutes.

Optima Work Instructions, for whom: methods, production, quality

Optima Work Instructions will be aimed at those who need to write down how the workplace works, and keep it updated as the machine or part changes.

You are in the methods department

You establish the ranges. They tell you what to do and in what order; the rest is up to you to write out how to do it, step by step.

You are responsible for production

Several teams, several operators on the same job: without a written operating procedure, everyone works in their own way.

You are in quality

A written operating procedure is the reference against which what is done at the station is compared. Without it, any discrepancies are discussed by memory.

What Optima Work Instructions will not do

Optima Work Instructions will cover the workflow of the task. The operating procedures that it will help you write will remain yours: it is your team that will validate them on the job.

  • It will not cover the safety of the post: hazards, measures and protective equipment are the responsibility of Optima Job.
  • It will not replace the training required by the Labour Code: a written procedure supports it.
  • It will not replace the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • It will not cover the posting notice required for dangerous chemical agents (article R4412-39).
  • He will not validate anything on his own: your operating procedures will remain under your signature.

We are not selling it today and we are not announcing a date.

In the meantime, Optima Work Instructions, which already exist

For the same position, an agent is already being proposed as a pilot. He does not write the operating procedures: he is responsible for the security of the position.

Frequently asked questions about the ranges and methods of operation

This document sets out, for a given item, the operations to be carried out, their order, the time allocated to each one, and the means employed. This is the definition that the Office québécois de la langue française gives of the range of operations. We found no standardized definition (AFNOR or ISO) of the operational range.

The range specifies what operations to perform, in what order and with what means. The operating mode specifies how to execute an operation at the station, step by step. The work instruction most often refers to the same text, written for the operator who follows it in front of the machine.

The Labour Code does not mention this document. It requires workers who use or maintain a machine to be informed of the instructions in the manufacturer’s manual (article R4323-1), and to be trained in safety (article L4141-2). A written operating procedure is a way of keeping this information at the workplace.

A written procedure that follows a common framework across the entire company, so that each position is read in the same way. «Standardized» then refers to an internal standard: we found no AFNOR or ISO standard that defines the procedure.

She is one of its sources: the Labour Code cites her instructions among those that the employer informs workers about (article R4323-1). But she describes the machine, not the sequence of tasks in your workshop on your parts. The operating procedure starts with the manual and what is actually done at the station.

The safety sheet at the station says what is dangerous at the station, the measures to be followed, and the protective equipment to be worn. The operating procedure tells how the task is to be carried out. The two complement each other: Optima Job prepares the safety sheet at the station; Optima Work Instructions, currently in development, will cover the ranges and operating procedures.

The Labour Code requires that safety training be renewed and supplemented as often as necessary to keep up with equipment developments (article R4323-3), and that workers be informed of changes in the equipment in their environment (article R4323-2). A procedure that describes the old machine no longer holds that information.
